Responsible Tourism Do you stay a little longer with us?
Time is a major determinant of travel sustainability.
Low-cost flights have shortened distances and encouraged the movement of large numbers of people even for short periods of time. Traveling, discovering, learning, and meeting each other are wonderful opportunities for knowledge and recreation. But short trips come at a high cost in environmental terms, also reducing the opportunity to really connect with our host place. Sustainable travel takes longer to benefit the environment, travelers, and host communities.
Why sustainable travel?
Let’s go in order: to reach our destination we produce a variable amount of Co2 depending on the medium we use. As an example: traveling from Milan to Rome by air emits 116.81 kg of Co2 per passenger; by car 67.35 kg and by train 25.18 kg.
Environmental impact
The train is definitely a better choice if difficult to reconcile with travel for a weekend night or two. But it is not only the means of transportation that has an impact: with short stays there will be more hotel room linen changes and, therefore, water consumption for washing machines.
Other benefits of sustainable travel
Sustainable travel, that is, planning longer trips-perhaps fewer over the course of the year-also allows one to take the time to get to know the place one is visiting more deeply, to connect with people, to have a less “hit-and-run” relationship.
