Events & Routes Memorial Day 2022: event at Cavagnis Palace

On January 28, 2022, as part of the 2022 Remembrance Day celebrations, the Foresteria Valdese in Venice will host the presentation of the book Come canne al vento, by Giorgio Girardet.

The city of Venice once again pays attention to the memory of the victims of Nazi persecution and extermination. Once again this year, a rich calendar of significant events spread throughout the municipality is proposed to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day 2022.

As part of the celebrations organized for Memorial Day 2022 by the City of Venice and in close collaboration with the Cavagnis Protestant Cultural Center, the Waldensian Guesthouse of Venice is honored to host the presentation of the book Come canna al vento ~ Diari della speranza di un pastore evangelico nei lager, by Giorgio Girardet.

The lecture will be by his daughter, Hilda Girardet (editor of the volume published by the publishing house Claudiana), together with Laura Micheletti and evangelical pastor Fabio Traversari.

The book

Giorgio Girardet, Waldensian pastor and journalist, was taken prisoner and deported to Germany for his outspoken refusal to continue the war on the side of the Germans and the Salò republicans.

The book is a meticulous transcription of his diaries found by his daughter, who annotated them. The small notebooks considered are those covering the period between March 1944 and January 1945 when Girardet was interned in the Sandbostel lager.

Sustained by great faith and a strong will to react, Girardet was the pastor of a small evangelical representation present in the camp. He multiplied opportunities for meetings and study and established a dialogue with some of the more open-minded Catholics.

In those months Girardet laid the foundation for his long life as a pastor, journalist and scholar, always innovative and open to the future (source: Claudiana).

Where and when

The book presentation will be held in the Busetto Hall, on the first main floor of Cavagnis Palace, on January 28, 2022 at 6 p.m. Admission is free in compliance with current anti Covid-19 health safety regulations. Those who wish can combine the event with a stay at the guesthouse, located in the historic center near St. Mark’s Square.
