To develop a community that is truly open to all and everyone through pathways of awareness, information and training. This is the goal of Territori S.M.A.R.T.\u00b2<\/a>, the project that activates the Piedmont territories of Val Pellice, Val Chisone and Val Germanasca to make them increasingly welcoming and accessible. <\/p>\n\n

Promoted by the Diaconia Valdese and supported by a dense network of partners, the initiative develops two lines of intervention: regeneration activities in inland areas and pathways alongside the local community on the theme of inclusion, to increase the accessibility of places starting with the active involvement of people with disabilities and their families, understanding needs together and establishing common goals.<\/p>\n\n

Torre Pellice Guesthouse is S.M.A.R.T.\u00b2.<\/h2>\n\n

The Foresteria Valdese of Torre Pellice<\/a>, which has always been attentive to guests with disabilities, has chosen to take part in Territori S.M.A.R.T.\u00b2 in two ways: by hosting one of the project meetings in its own spaces and by requesting dedicated training for facility staff. <\/p>\n\n

It assumes that adapting the environment to the needs of a person with physical or mental disabilities means making the place more welcoming for everyone and everyone else as well, and that a great deal can be done even without structural interventions. <\/p>\n\n

A ramp will be useful for those who use mobility aids but also for those who move a stroller; a menu with pictures will help those who are no longer able to read but also those who are non-native speakers. <\/p>\n\n

At the center always is communication: it is not just about architectural barriers, but about empowering people to understand whether the place is suitable for their needs.<\/p>\n\n

Shifting the focus from disability to the disabling environment<\/h2>\n\n

The philosophy behind the Territories S.M.A.R.T.\u00b2 training is to shift the focus from disabilities to spaces, which are often disabling in themselves, and to act on them.<\/p>\n\n

Small actions with big impact: implement the use of Augmentative Alternative Communication (images and symbols that flank or replace verbal language, to make those with permanent or temporary communication deficits feel at ease); focus on signage, so that anyone can decide how to move around the space; don’t just provide services, but remember to always communicate them.<\/p>\n\n

Changing the culture of hospitality with expedients within the reach of anyone, but with important results.<\/p>\n\n

But so what do I find in the guesthouse?<\/h2>\n\n
